Waist Trainers: Are They Really Worth the Hype?

Here we are one year into the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people lost their jobs. Some had to work from home. Some parents had to take on the role of teacher. After a while, many came to the conclusion that there just isn’t enough time in the day, especially not for a workout. However, everyone still wants to look “snatched.”

Thus the hype of waist trainers begun. Waist trainers claim to give the wearer an hour-glass figure by cinching their waistline. Many hear this and think that this is a quick way to get the body they desire, no workout necessary. To the busy work-from-home mom, this sounds like the dream. However, anyone looking to use this as an option should do additional research before making that purchase, and here’s why:

Compromised Oxygen Supply

Waist trainers put pressure on your waist and consequently the organs in that area, in order to get the body in the shape of the product. This confines the diaphragm and can make it difficult to breathe. Lack of oxygen can lead to dizziness and fainting.

Limited Blood Flow

The restriction this product places on the body limits the amount of blood flow to and from the core. A restricted blood flow can lead to clotting and muscle weakening. Despite popular belief, waist trainers actually weaken the core muscles. A strong core is necessary for simple everyday movements, as well as advanced movements.

Skin Irritations

Because the waist trainer is usually applied tightly to your skin and underneath your clothes, it can cause some irritation. Some people work out with the waist trainer, trapping sweat in between the product and their skin. This can also cause irritation.

Digestion Complications

Restricting your stomach and intestines for a prolonged period of time, and with great frequency, can cause gastrointestinal problems.

Acid Reflux

Waist trainers not only put pressure on your stomach, they can also push the organ upwards. This can lead to acid reflux, a normally painful and uncomfortable condition. Frequent acid reflux can lead to further problems like deteriorating the walls of your esophagus.

Low Self Esteem

Waist trainers usually require that you wear them for a certain period of time every day for a given period of time. However, in the beginning, you will not see much progress, if any. This can lead to low self-esteem because once the waist trainer comes off, you are back at square one.

Full disclaimer, waist trainers are not the same as pregnancy belts. Those bands are used for support, and are not corset-like.

It is also important to remember that we can not spot reduce fat. There is no evidence within current research to support this theory. Therefore, the idea of what the waist trainer claims to do just does not make sense. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Please, please, please do your research before purchasing a waist trainer. Also do not let anyone fool you/pressure you into purchasing one. If you truly wish to buy one, buy one with knowledge of the possible consequences.
